Well thought out, Chris. Would love to get in a debate over this stuff if our paths cross again.

Enjoyed the read, please continue. As for OG qualification, how does one account for athletes injured the previous season and rounding back into shape just prior to the Trials (if they would even be held)? Likewise, how does one account for someone ranked high the previous season with a fast time in the current season, but who gets injured just prior to the trials? It seems like there exists the potential for significant subjectivity which is what (for the most part) the current T&F OG qualification avoids. This level of subjectivity has created its own issues in other nations (see Great Britain) and sports in the US (gymnastics in particular). Just my $0.02. Again, keep up the great work!

Well written - and no need to apologize for such an awesome phrase! - and thoughtful. But I wish we could all settle on calling our sport track AND field. Inclusivity is all the rage, yes?

Intelligent, rigorous and perceptive writing, much needed. Thanks Chris
